This seemingly ordinary fruit opened the floodgates for countless party and menu ideas, and now I’m ready to share my exact blueprint with you. Here’s how to create your citrus-themed brunch and the ultimate birthday party for mom!

Oranges and lemons and grapefruits, oh my!

If you’re tired of repeating the same birthday party ideas and ready to step outside the box, you’re in the right place.

Citrus-themed parties combine the organic elements of fruit and the vibrant colors of the spring and summer seasons to create a one-of-a-kind party experience. It’s a perfectly imperfect theme, with each fruit bringing its own hues and shapes to the table.

I went all out this year and threw the ultimate birthday party for mom at home (because she deserves it!) And I’m going to share exactly how I put it together—starting with the mood board, and ending with the food and decor.

Get ready to dive into the citrus theme and throw the best birthday party for mom! Pick your favorite citrus (or use them all) and let’s get started!

Organize Your Ideas With a Mood Board

As much as I love to look at party inspo on Pinterest and Instagram, all that content can get overwhelming after a while. The never-ending ideas consume my train of thought as I scroll, and before I know it, my mind is moving at a mile a minute.

Sound familiar?

Well, after planning countless birthday parties, I found that the best way to control the content overload is to centralize your favorite inspo and party ideas in one mood board. Your mood board will become your reference point (and honestly, your lifesaver) as you make design decisions and party purchases.

Here’s the mood board I created to capture all the citrus-themed inspiration I gathered from social platforms, online retailers, and my own party inventory:

The mood board might look like a lot, but it’s actually pretty simple to create. If you’re new to party mood boards, let me give you some pointers I’ve learned over the years:

How to Create a Party Mood Board

  • Identify a few insp pics to get started. I source most of my party inspiration from Pinterest, but Instagram, TikTok, and blogs are also great places to start. Narrow down your inspo pics based on the items you already have so you’re not starting from scratch. For example, I already owned a glass punch bowl and coupe cups, so I tried to look for inspo that included those elements to minimize costs.
  • Layer in the statement decor pieces for your party. In my case, the standout pieces were the scalloped-edge placemats, glass punch bowl, chrome coupe cups, mint julep cup, and framed cocktail menu. I wanted the eyes to focus on those elements, so I added them on top of the inspo pics to emphasize them.
  • Add the color scheme and natural elements (greenery, flowers, fruits, etc.) on top. Orange was the focal point of the party, so I added an orange doodle on the top layer to draw attention to the central color. I also added eucalyptus as a natural element. At that point, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to create floral arrangements or just use greenery, so I kept it simple and open-ended.
  • Customize the layout. I prefer a messy, layered look because it captures the party’s bright color palette, vibrant mood, and imperfect style. Play around with the layout to determine what works best for you.

Once you create your mood board, it’s time to list your to-dos, create a timeline, and make party purchases (my favorite part!)

Finalize Your To-Do List & Timeline

I’ll admit, these administrative steps represent the not-so-glamorous side of party planning, but they’re essential to the success of your event. Trust me, you can tell when someone took the time to plan vs. when they didn’t. The results are night and day.

The planning part takes some organizational skills, but it’s nothing you can’t handle. First things first, brainstorm everything you need to do to put this party together. Visualize the party decorations, table set up, food and drink menu, and party venue. Remember, your mood board is your guide!

Next, create a realistic timeline for your party planning to-dos. The bigger the party, the more time you’ll need to plan and prepare. To get a more precise timeline, start by determining the lead time for each element of your event:

Party Planning Lead Times

  • Food: If you choose the catering route, figure out how far in advance you need to place your order. If you’re making the food yourself, map out a schedule for grocery shopping, meal prep, and presentation. For potluck-style parties, determine how much notice you need to give guests so there are no surprises.
  • Decorations: Make a list of the party decorations you need to buy or rent, and write down the estimated shipping time or pick-up time frame for each. I like to give myself at least a one-week buffer to account for delays.
  • Floral Arrangements: If you’re making the floral arrangements yourself, determine how many days you need to buy and assemble them. If you’re ordering arrangements from a florist, figure out how far in advance you need to place your order.
  • Venue: If you’re like me and like to host your events at home, plan out how much time you need to clean and prepare your space, or outsource the cleaning. If you’re hosting elsewhere, give yourself enough time to find the right venue and book it in advance.
  • Invitations/RSVPs: Plan to send your invitations at least a few weeks before the RSVP deadline, to give your guests enough time to respond.

Phew! That’s a lot of moving pieces. But once you establish your priorities and timeline, the party planning process becomes much more manageable.

Plan Your Citrus-Themed Menu

Forget about diamonds, *ChatGPT* is a girl’s best friend. At least when it comes to menu curation. As a culinary novice, I took my questions directly to AI, and it did not disappoint. I typed in the following prompt:

“I’m hosting a citrus-themed brunch in the spring season with four guests. Give me # distinct [sweet or savory] appetizer recipes and # distinct [sweet or savory] entree options incorporating citrus. Each recipe should include no more than # ingredients.”

From there, I selected the recipes I thought my mom would enjoy the most. She’s a sweet and savory gal, so I picked a honey lime fruit salad with mint to start and a savory egg and sourdough entree. I actually prefer sourcing recipe ideas from ChatGPT and then searching online for different versions of those recipes.

AI recipes tend to have more mistakes, so I go straight to the source to guarantee a great meal. Here are links to the exact recipes I used:

Appetizer: Honey Lime Berry Salad with Mint

Entree: Parmesan Scrambled Eggs with Sourdough

(The entree doesn’t include citrus, but it served as a palate cleanser between the citrus-heavy appetizer and dessert)

Dessert: Lemon Poppy Seed Buns from Trader Joe’s

Create a Fancy At-Home Bar

Out of all the elements in this citrus-themed brunch, the bar table is by far my favorite. I saw so many bar inspo pics on Pinterest leading up to the brunch, I knew I had to recreate it in my own home. And on a practical note, separating the drinks allowed me to fit a more elaborate tablescape on the dining table, so I highly recommend creating a designated drinks area.

You don’t need a fancy bar to create this set-up, just a folding table and a tablecloth. I used my dad’s grill stand, lol. From there, I recreated a coupe tower I saw on Pinterest using chrome coupe cups from CB2, and placed clementines inside the cups to tie it back to the theme.

Canva is my secret weapon when it comes to creating elevated, custom birthday parties. I designed a cocktail menu from scratch and printed it at Walgreens for $1.00 (you seriously can’t beat that price). Download the exact menu I used below!

Then, I attached it to a picture frame that I DIY-ed with linen fabric. The framed menu was actually really easy to create using spare fabric, an old frame, and adhesive spray. Another example of Pinterest inspiration coming to life!

Mimosas were on the menu, so I finished the bar with champagne on ice, a pitcher of peach, pineapple, and orange juice (I used this exact mimosa recipe and substituted the apricot nectar for peach), and dehydrated orange slices for garnish.

The brass lamp paired beautifully with the warm color palette and was the perfect finishing touch for the bar table.

Curate the Ultimate Citrus Tablescape

Now that the bar is ready to go, let’s move on to the main event: the dining table. The anatomy of my tablescapes is simple.

Tablescape base

I start with a solid base. Ideally, that’s the table. But if the color or material doesn’t match the theme, I’ll use a tablecloth to ground the design. In this case, the warm wood table paired nicely with the warm, orange table elements, so I went bare.

Tablesettings

Next, I ground each table setting with a charger or a placemat. As mentioned in the mood board section, the scalloped-edge placemats were one of my “standout” elements for this brunch, so I added those in. These placemats are from the dollar section at Target—shocking, I know—but I linked really similar placemats here.

I usually select dinnerware based on the food I’m serving. In this case, the menu included a fruit salad appetizer and one main entree. I set the table with a green dinner plate and a small white bowl for fruit.

I tied the theme in by draping orange and white striped napkins between the plate and the bowl. Luckily, these napkins came in a set of 12, so I was able to use the spares to plate the pastries and decorate the table.

I use the same logic for glassware. Since we were drinking mimosas, I selected stemmed glasses, which were the closest thing I had to a champagne flute. I kept it simple with our everyday silverware and arranged oranges randomly throughout the length of the table to ground the centerpiece.

Centerpiece

For finishing touches, I added a pair of white cordless lamps with orange bows (it’s all in the details) and a homemade flower arrangement (shout out Trader Joe’s flowers). Click the pictures below to shop all the party decorations, tablescape, and bar supplies:

Orange You Glad You Picked the Citrus Theme?

Whether you’re going all-out with a citrus theme or keeping things simple, hosting a birthday celebration for mom isn’t about creating the perfect tablescape or an Instagram-worthy bar setup (although those are pretty fun to make).

It’s about the love that goes into every detail. The time spent browsing Pinterest for inspiration. The careful planning that goes into each step. And the framed menu you designed at midnight because you wanted everything to look perfect for Mom.

When you put this kind of intentional effort into celebrating someone, you’re showing them they matter. Because at the heart of every great party – citrus-themed or otherwise – is the desire to make the people we love feel truly celebrated.
