Home Organization Tips: Overcoming Mental Roadblocks

I think we can all agree that an organized home beats a disorganized one. But if we all prefer order over chaos, why is it so hard to keep things in their place?

It’s a psychological problem, not a storage problem. Research has shown that living in a cluttered environment can impact productivity, concentration, energy levels, and even mood. So the question becomes: if you can’t motivate yourself in your environment, how can you improve it?

Well, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Instead of fighting a losing battle, let’s avoid the paralyzing feeling of overwhelm and create home organization systems that actually work. No more purging marathons or cleaning overhauls. I’m talking small, manageable home organization hacks that you can implement in your home today for a quick win.

11 *Shockingly Easy* Home Organization Hacks

Let’s prioritize progress over perfection and mental clarity over chaos. Here are 11 genius organization hacks that will completely change your relationship with your space.

1. Create a QR Label System

Forget cluttered, disorganized boxes. This QR label system is revolutionizing home organization. All you need is the ToteScan System ($11.99 for 45 QR codes) and closed containers (I linked the exact ones I use in my home, plus a few *aesthetically pleasing* options below!)

This genius hack allows you to organize, label, and manage all of your belongings from your phone. Just fill the container, add the QR code on the exterior, and fill out the information on your phone. When you scan the QR code, the box name and contents will appear, so you don’t even need to open the lid to figure out what’s inside.

The best part by far is the search function. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve wasted opening countless containers in my basement, searching for just one item. Now, I just search the item on my phone, and the ToteScan system tells me exactly where to find it. This is seriously a lifesaver!

2. Make Any Shelf a Slide Out Drawer

Shelves are notorious for pile-ups and chaos. The large open space is tricky to organize, let alone maximize. There are a few helpful home organization products, like shelf dividers, baskets, and tiered organizers. But my new favorite is this slide-out drawer system that turns any shelf into an organized drawer.

Just peel the adhesive, stick it directly onto your shelf, and voilà! You’re done. These slide-out drawers come in ten different sizes to fit a variety of closet shelves or kitchen cabinets, and feature a neutral colorway to accommodate a wide range of design styles. Here are a few other incredible drawer options:

3. Organize Your Kitchen & Bath Towels

Gone are the days of stuffing kitchen and bathroom towels in drawers and hoping for the best. This towel organization hack is so simple, I can’t believe I never thought of it before!

All you need are $5 drying racks from Amazon. Simply place the drying rack in your drawer, roll your towels, and arrange each one in the space between the rods. I like these because they come in four different sizes to fit a variety of drawers, as well as three wood finishes to suit your design preference.

This home organization hack takes less than a minute to do, and it will make a massive difference in your kitchen and bathroom storage.

4. Keep Your Cables in Check

If you struggle to keep your charging cords and cables organized, this home organization hack is for you! All you need is a pack of 4″x6″ photo storage boxes and a label maker (this is the exact one I use). Group your items together into their respective boxes, put a label on the exterior, and you’re good to go!

These clear boxes are ideal for storing small items, like charging cords, batteries, keys, and command strips. No more sorting through a pile of cords to find the right charger.

You can also opt for a pack of 16, which includes a storage container to keep all your small boxes together. It’s compact enough to fit in a cabinet or shelf for easy access.

5. Upgrade Your Bedding Storage

These bed sheet organizers have blown up on social media, and for good reason. I decided to test them out last year and after 12 months, I can confirm that they are definitely worth the hype.

Before these came along, I was messily folding my bed sheets and storing them in piles in my linen closet. After a while, all the bed sheets started to look the same, and it was impossible to find the one I needed when I needed it. It was an imperfect system, to say the least.

Now, all of my bed sheets are stored and labeled in separate boxes, so I know exactly where everything is at all times. This pack of 8 even includes a little clear window so I can see what’s inside without having to open the box. Since last year, I’ve re-ordered these organizers a few times for my parents’ house and even my staging inventory.

It’s safe to say that I love these organizers. My linen closet (and my life) would be a mess without them!

6. Maximize Vertical Storage

Paper towels took up so much valuable storage space in my home…until now. I have to admit, this home organization tip is one of my favorites.

Secure two tension rods between your shelf and the ceiling, leaving enough space between the wall and the rod to fit the width of the paper towel roll. Then, stack the paper towels vertically on top of each other.

Anytime you need a new roll, grab one from the bottom of the stack, and the rest will fall in line. It’s seriously that easy. My paper towel storage went from taking up an entire shelving unit to just 10 inches of shelf space. My only regret is not doing this sooner!

7. Multiply Your Closet Space

If you have limited hanging space or simply too much clothing for your closet (we can all relate to that), I have the perfect home organization hack for you. Slide a connector hook through the metal head of your clothing hanger until it reaches the bottom.

With the connector hook facing out, place another clothing hanger on the hook and voila! You just doubled your hanging space.

I recommend grouping items that you wear together, like matching sets or pajamas. Alternatively, you can group items from the same clothing category (like tank tops or t-shirts) to keep things organized.

Just keep the weight of the items in mind before hanging them on the connector hooks. Prioritize lighter items on the connector hooks and heavier items on the rod so the clothing hangers can support the weight.

8. Make the Most of Your Drawers

My first condo had a total of one drawer in the entire place. I’m not even exaggerating. I would’ve killed to have a tiered organizer like this to maximize the space in my drawer back then. But just because I missed out on it, doesn’t mean you have to.

Check this out! It’s an expandable organizer that adjusts to the width of your drawer. Plus, it opens up into three equally sized compartments that triple your storage space.

You can use this in your kitchen to store cooking supplies, in your bathroom for easy-to-access toiletries, or even in your makeup vanity for all of your beauty items. The possibilities are endless!

9. Keep Track of Your Manuals

Never misplace a manual ever again with this clever home organization idea! This is one of my favorite home organizing hacks for small spaces because it keeps everything you need in one place.

Gather all the manuals, guides, and warranties in your house and group them into piles. Once everything is separated, place each pile into a mesh zipper pouch and add a label to the exterior so you know what’s what. This is a genius way to keep your papers in order and easily accessible (because you never know when you’ll need them!)

These mesh zipper pouches are my favorites because they come in seven different sizes to fit all types of documents.

10. Create the Ultimate Gift Wrapping Station

I saw Kenzie Elizabeth use this gift wrap door organizer on her Instagram, and I *added to cart* immediately. I have never bought something so fast. And here’s why.

The unofficial gift wrapping station in my home was a glorified mess. I had piles of ribbon, gift wrap, and tissue paper stacked on top of each other, and it was driving me crazy. I had tried using storage containers and shelf organizers to keep things tidy, but nothing seemed to work. Until I found this door organizer.

Now, I have a dedicated station for my wrapping paper, bows, ribbon, name tags, gift bags, and scissors in an area of the house I wasn’t even using (my door!) I couldn’t recommend this home organization product enough. It cleared my floor space, maximized my door space, and simplified my life.

11. Put Your Most Used Items on Wheels

Last but certainly not least is this small but mighty multi-functional storage cart. This is for the items you use most frequently around your house, whether it’s cleaning supplies, bedside essentials, or even skincare products.

I have a storage cart for my most frequently used cleaning supplies, which makes my daily and weekly cleaning routine significantly easier. Instead of carrying my cleaning products from room to room, I roll my cart around and have everything I need within easy reach. It’s seriously a game changer!

This post is all about the best home organization hacks.
