Home Renovation Ideas on a Budget: Paint is Your Power Tool
If you want to make a big impact on your home while keeping your bank account in check, these home renovation ideas on a budget are for you! All you need is paint, a brush or roller, and a bit of elbow grease. Let’s get started!

Home renovations come in all shapes and sizes. HGTV showcases full-scale renovations that start and end within a single 60-minute episode. But the majority of us work in stages. We celebrate the small wins and the “little by little” approach that accommodates busy schedules, tight budgets, and decision overwhelm.
The truth is, you don’t need to undergo a full gut renovation to make high-impact changes to your home. There are so many beginner-friendly home renovation projects to elevate the value and design of your home without requiring a general contractor. One of my favorite home renovation ideas on a budget is painting.
Not groundbreaking, I know. But painting often gets overlooked because it’s viewed as too basic, too easy, and too simplistic.
But I couldn’t disagree more. Paint is the difference between old and new, tired and exciting, disheveled and pristine. It can completely transform a space in one weekend. Few home renovation projects can say the same.
To prove my theory that painting is the best of all home renovation ideas on a budget, I’m going to share “before and after” projects that used only paint.
My hope is that these projects help spark your creativity so you can transform spaces in your home at your own pace and within your budget. Without further ado, let’s jump into the best home renovation ideas on a budget that made me fall in love with painting.

Paint Transformation: Cape-Style Exterior
A new coat of paint can virtually transform a home. One day, your home is bland, outdated, and an eyesore. And the next, neighbors are knocking on the door asking for paint color references.
The change is really that jarring. I know because I went through it myself.
Before:
When my husband and I first bought this cape-style investment property, the siding was painted in a tired, barn red color with green shutters to match (well, not really). The red color was too harsh for a beach home, and frankly, super outdated. Needless to say, my house was in desperate need of a makeover.

Initially, I was too overwhelmed to start. Just looking at the exterior gave me a sense of code red panic. What’s the first step? Can the exterior even be saved? How much will it cost?
My mind raced with different ideas. But after the big expense of purchasing the house, my options were limited. To save time and money, I decided to keep everything as is and just give the house a fresh coat of paint.
What’s the worst that could happen? If I didn’t like the new color, I could change it again. One thing was certain: it would definitely look better than it did now. Spoiler alert: it did!
After:
Since the house sat squarely in the shade, I opted for a lighter color palette. I used Silver Mist by Benjamin Moore for the siding and a darker blue (Kensington Blue by Benjamin Moore) on the shutters and flower boxes to help them stand out.

I knew I wanted a pop of color on the door (if you’ve been to Cape Cod, you get it), so I went with Marblehead Gold by Benjamin Moore, and I’m in love with the result. Painting the front of the house took less than a week, and it had a significant impact on the curb appeal of the house.

The only other change we made to the exterior was updating the old light fixture to (literally) brighten up the main entrance. The old fixture didn’t match the style or location of the home, so it needed to go. Pro tip: updating existing electrical fixtures is another great renovation idea on a budget because it’s quick, easy, and affordable.
Here’s the exact exterior wall sconce we used:

From there, we just refreshed the landscaping, and the final result looks like a completely different house. Would you believe it if I told you this project cost under $2,500? Honestly, I’m still shocked how much we were able to do on that budget.
That just goes to show that paint is the best out of all home renovation ideas on a budget. Still not convinced? Let’s move on to another example. This time, we’re highlighting an interior transformation.
Renovation Ideas for Old Homes: The Power of Paint
The next room I transformed with a few coats of paint is my living room. You’ll notice below that the focal point here is the fireplace.
It’s pretty unremarkable, I know. At least that’s what I thought when I first stepped foot in this room. But with the beautiful French doors and natural light, I knew this space had potential.
Before:

I was grappling with two design decisions: the outdated fireplace and the boring off-white walls. There was nothing wrong with the room per se, but it just felt lackluster.
I could choose a paint color for the walls, another for the trim and fireplace, and a third for the ceiling, but that would make this already small room feel even more disjointed and enclosed. So instead, I opted to Color Drench the space.

The secret when you have a small space like this one is to paint the walls, ceiling, and trim in one paint color. This creates a flow throughout the whole room without breaking the line of sight. Plus, if you use a dark paint color like I did, it makes the room feel more moody and intimate. It’s a win-win!

So, I went to the paint store (Farrow & Ball, specifically) to find a dark, moody paint color to drench my entire living room. Go big or go home, right? My goal was to create a cozy, moody room where I could light a fire, curl up with a good book, and host guests without making any major alterations to the space.
I had zero experience color drenching with a dark paint color, but I decided to just go for it. Sometimes in life, you have to make bold choices.
After:
And boy, did the bold choices pay off. Just two coats of Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball made the room feel larger, more inviting, and, dare I say, more sophisticated. Honestly, I hate picking favorites, but this has to be one of my top paint transformations.
If you’re new to color drenching, take a moment to notice how it affects the living room. It envelopes the space in a dark blue/green hue and allows your line of sight to travel uninterrupted throughout the room.

Some people say that using dark colors in a small room can make it feel more enclosed. In this case, we thought the opposite was true; the dark color gave the room purpose and a personality it didn’t have before. The moody blue/green color balanced the flood of natural light in this space, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.
Now, would I recommend drenching a dark paint color in a room with limited natural light? It depends on the space. If you’re creating a cozy movie room or reading nook, I’d say go for it. But if bright, airy spaces are more your speed, I would limit dark color drenching to rooms with an excess of natural light.

Phew, we covered a lot of ground! For finishing touches, we added some crown molding and a new, dark fireplace insert to match the moody vibes, and the room was complete!
