But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a designer-looking bathroom. The key is to focus your *limited* home improvement budget on the details that shape the room’s overall look. Like your vanity, countertops, bathtub…things that take up a lot of visual space. Updating even one or two of these features can make a huge difference in your bathroom’s design.

If you’re looking to add value to your home, the bathroom is a great place to start. According to The Journal of Light Construction, bathrooms had the second-highest ROI rating among single-room renovations in 2025. Return on investment (ROI) measures the profitability of an investment by comparing the return to its total cost.

Mid-range bathroom remodels nationwide averaged an ROI of 80%, second only to minor kitchen remodels, which averaged 113% (based on 28 remodeling projects in 119 different US markets). That’s a pretty solid return. And it’s only getting higher. 

Compare that to the average return of 74% in 2024 and 67% in 2023, and you’ll notice that mid-range bathroom renovations are only getting more valuable over time.

Why pay for a new vanity when you can update the one you have? The trick here is to refresh the front-facing elements rather than replacing the structure altogether.

Focusing your investment on paint materials and cabinet hardware is a cost-effective way to update your cabinets’ look without expensive alterations.

Build Your Painting Toolkit

Start by stocking your toolkit with a can of primer (this one is ideal for high-moisture spaces), a paint roller kit (a great option for small jobs), and a paintbrush for fine details. Since bathrooms are exposed to high moisture levels, it’s important to choose moisture-resistant paint to protect your vanity from mold and mildew.

What if I told you there was a way to upgrade your existing countertops without dropping thousands on a stone slab? The key is to buy remnant stone. Remnants are leftover pieces of stone slabs cut for previous orders. Instead of tossing those unused pieces, stone fabricators sell them at a big discount (I’m talking 30-70% off).

Remnant stone is a great way to incorporate marble, quartz, granite, or whatever dream stone you saved on your Pinterest board into your bathroom design without paying full price. 

The only downside is availability. Supply is limited to whatever stone fabricators have left over from other jobs, so it’s important to keep an open mind when evaluating your options.

Remnants vary in size, but the larger pieces can accommodate a single or double vanity, so be sure to measure the exact dimensions of your existing countertop before committing.

3. Refinish Your Bathtub Instead of Buying a New One

Whether you prefer soaking in the tub after a long day or taking a quick shower in the morning, it’s important to have at least one tub in your home to attract more home buyers (especially those with children or pets). Instead of replacing your dated tub, consider refinishing it.

That’s right. You can actually remove the grime, cracks, and discoloration on your tub by having it professionally refinished. This is a great option for homeowners who have a functional tub (no leaks or mold) and only superficial imperfections.

Replacing the tile in your bathroom can be tedious and expensive. Luckily, there’s a budget-friendly way to upgrade the look of your tile without hurting your bank account. The solution? Grout pens.

These magical pens come in a variety of shades, allowing you to enhance the color of your existing grout or change the look of your tile altogether. My favorite grout pen costs under $9 and covers up to 150 feet of 2mm grout. 

And the installation is as easy as drawing on a page. First, test a small area in your bathroom to confirm you like the color. Then just follow the existing grout lines with the pen until they’re completely coated.

Grout pens come in water-based, mold-resistant formulas, making them suitable for high-humidity areas like the shower. Keep in mind that grout pens are only a temporary fix and may require touch-ups over time. But if you’re looking for a quick, cost-effective solution for surface stains, grout pens are your best bet.
