I’m a sucker for a good Halloween party. From the silly costumes to the eccentric party decor, every detail of Halloween is an escape from reality. And with the cold months quickly approaching, it’s fun to take a break from the real world for one night.

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party with friends or a more casual get-together with your family, the Halloween table decor needs to be top-notch. Let’s make your Halloween party one to remember.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s jump into the good stuff. Here’s my go-to formula for elevated tablescapes for Halloween that strike a balance between spooky and sophisticated vibes.

Start with Your Halloween Table Cloth

Step one is setting your foundational table lines. Your Halloween table cloth and Halloween table runner will act as the neutral base of your tablescape that you can build on with the dinnerware, glassware, flatware, and Halloween decorations.

The simpler, the better. As a general rule, I prefer using neutral table linens, which act as a blank canvas for the next part of the formula. Plus, neutral tablecloths are easy to reuse for other occasions, especially within the same season (I usually double up my tablecloth for Halloween and Thanksgiving).

Whether you prefer taper candles, pillar candles, or a combination of both, you can’t go wrong with this super-easy candle centerpiece idea. Start by adding a variety of candle holders with different heights along the center of your table. Work with what you have, and shop for the rest.

You can stagger the candle holders for a messier, more random look or create an ascending and descending silhouette for a more intentional vibe. You can’t go wrong with either method.

To make the Halloween centerpiece even fancier, stick to silver and brass candle holders. You can even add some candelabras in the mix to step up the elegance factor.

Candles & Wax Drips

If you’re using a variety of different candle holders, stick to one color candle. In contrast, if all your candle holders are made of the same material, mix different-colored candles (like ivory, black, and burgundy) for a spooky, elevated look.

Add Some Halloween Color with the Place Settings

Moving on to the dinnerware and flatware. I like to use these elements to introduce the Halloween tablescape color scheme.

Halloween is known for its oranges, purples, greens, yellows, and deep wine reds. Honestly, as a neutral girl, these vibrant colors are a lot for my brain to handle. If you’re in the same boat, let’s simplify things. Instead of trying to incorporate every traditional holiday color, choose just one.

That’s right, we’re going the monochrome route. After years of putting together holiday tablescapes, I’ve found that it’s way easier to design with different tones than with different colors. Plus, the tonal look is much more elegant in my opinion, so why not lean into it?

This year, I’m going all in on wine red. It has a gory factor, which is perfect for Halloween, while also giving *old school elegance*.

Table Linens

For the table linens, I’m starting with a dark burgundy placemat and a cherry red dinner napkin to set the foundation for the dinnerware. If you’re new to monochrome place settings, pick one Halloween color and use the darkest tone as the place mat.

Then, use a lighter and brighter tone (of the same color) for the dinner napkin. The dinnerware will be a middle ground tone between those two elements.

Dinnerware

Use a dinner plate as a foundation for your dinnerware, and build from there. Depending on your menu, you may need a salad plate, soup bowl, or dessert plate on top. Make sure you figure that out before making any purchases!

I selected a wine-red dinner plate and a slightly lighter red salad plate to create a gradient effect. I like to fold the dinner napkin and place it between the dinner plate and salad plate for a simple, sophisticated look.

Add Statement Drinkware

Similar to the dinnerware, you need to first determine what beverages you’ll be serving before sourcing your drinkware. Once you have finalized your drink menu, select a statement drinkware combo for each place setting.

I always include one water glass and one cocktail or wine glass for each guest. Remember, just because it’s a water glass, doesn’t mean it has to be boring! You can mix and match different styles to create a one-of-a-kind glass combo. My favorite pairing is a stainless steel coupe glass (I have nine of these, and my collection is still growing) and a simple highball glass for water.

Finish off with Simple Halloween Table Decorations

You could go the traditional pumpkin and skulls route, or you can get fancy with faux pearls, festive dice, Halloween-themed tarot cards, and Halloween newspaper clippings. Kind of strange, I know, but hear me out.

Everyone uses the traditional holiday icons for their Halloween decorations. I’m guilty of it too. But if we want to create a unique, elevated Halloween party experience, we need to think outside the box.

Drape faux pearl garlands on your candle holders and candelabras, spread Halloween-themed newspaper clippings around your table, and layer in some festive playing cards and antique brass dice to complete the look. Your guests will be shocked by the final result.
