My family got our first dog, Sparky, when he was just 8 weeks old, and we celebrated every birthday and milestone with him for 16 years. When I adopted my pittie mix, Leo, in 2021, I kept the tradition going.
I’ll admit, Leo’s birthday parties are a little over the top (my guests can attest). But they’re easier to plan than they look.
All you need is an easy-to-follow party plan, a few thoughtful details designed just for your dog, and a space where everyone (tails included) can relax and have fun.
If you’re stuck in the planning stage and need help executing, this is your starting point. Think of me as your dog party consultant. I’m walking you through my exact process to plan a dog party at home, from themes and invitations to food, games, and the little details that matter most to your pup.
Choose a Dog Party Theme or Color Palette
Before you make any purchases, start by choosing a dog party theme or color palette. This is an easy way to bring personality to the party. And it will help guide every decision that follows, from your dog party decorations to your menu and even your invitations.
Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Dog Party Ideas: Themes You Can Steal
If themes aren’t your thing, stick to a central color palette instead. This is actually the first year I’m choosing a theme for Leo’s birthday party. In years past, I chose 3 to 4 colors (1 primary color, 1 secondary color, and 1-2 accent colors) and planned my entire party around that palette.

For Leo’s second birthday, I chose dark blue as the primary color, light blue as the secondary color, and orange and gray as accents. From there, I carried those colors through the decorations, table setup, cake, and even the outfits. This took all the guesswork out of party planning and made design decisions way easier.
Choose a *Dog-Friendly* Venue
This step is really important because your party needs to accommodate both humans and dogs. Depending on your guest list, you may need extra space to run around or a private area for *dog-selective* guests.
At the very least, your venue should offer a place to rest and socialize, access to shade (if you’re hosting outdoors), and plenty of fresh water to keep everyone hydrated and happy.
I usually host my dog parties at my parents’ house because it has a fenced-in yard, multiple water stations, shaded areas to rest, and enough space for both the dogs and the humans to spread out.
If you’re hosting outside your home, I’d recommend a park, beach, hiking trail (for a more active party), or a local indoor dog facility (think dog aquatic centers or a dog bar) for larger groups. Just make sure to check the rules and regulations for your venue and book in advance to lock in your spot.
Create Custom Dog Party Invitations
The best way to gather your favorite pups and humans is to send custom dog party invitations. I created a dog party invitation template you can customize with all your party details directly on Canva.
If you’re new to Canva, think of it as your personal graphic designer. It basically gives you all the tools you need to create your own graphics without a design degree. Canva is free to use, and you don’t need a premium membership to customize this party invitation template.
Start by making a copy of the template by clicking the button below labeled “Get the Freebie“.👇
Then, customize your invite with your dog’s name, age, party date, and location. You can also adjust the colors and fonts to match your theme or color palette. It’s that easy!
Once you’re done editing, save and download the file, and choose from our recommended printing options below:
- CVS Pharmacy: You can print 5″x7″ photos in a Glossy or Matte finish for $2.99 each. The Glossy finish is usually available for same-day pick-up, while the Matte finish can take a few days to print.
- Walgreens: Like CVS, Walgreens offers 5″x 7″ photos in a Glossy or Matte finish, costing $2.99 each. However, Walgreens has an edge over CVS because it offers same-day pickup for both Glossy and Matte finish photos.
- Canva: Best for bulk orders (at least 10 invites). I usually select 5″x7″ Invitations (Portrait) with their Premium Paper and Gloss Finish. A pack of 50 costs $50 ($1.00 per invitation), but the price increases significantly for smaller quantities. For example, purchasing 5 invitations from Canva costs $3.05 per invite, making CVS and Walgreens a more cost-effective option.
Don’t Overpay for Your Invitations
Before you print, check for promotions. CVS and Walgreens run frequent discounts, which can cut the cost per invitation almost in half.
And if you don’t feel like printing, you can send a digital version instead. It’s way faster and works just as well!
Curate a Dog Party Menu (For Dogs & Humans)
No dog party is complete without treats! Before you create your dog party menu, check with your guests about any allergies (for both dogs and humans).
Here are a few dog party ideas food your pups will actually love.

Dog Birthday Cake
You can bake a peanut butter cake with yogurt frosting from scratch, use a cake mix, or order one from a local dog bakery.
I’ve done all 3 options, and my dog always prefers the homemade version. That said, the cake mix option is a great backup if you’re short on time.
Frozen Yogurt Treats
Blend plain yogurt, honey, and berries, pour into silicone molds, and freeze overnight. These are quick, easy, and always a hit.

Doggy Meatballs
Made with oats, ground chicken, eggs, plain yogurt, and parsley. They’re simple, affordable, and great for larger groups.
For the humans, keep it simple. Think picnic-style snacks like chips and dip, sandwiches, lemonade, iced tea, and fruit skewers for dessert. Make sure everything is clearly labeled, and double-check that nothing contains ingredients that are toxic to dogs, like chocolate, grapes, or xylitol.
Once your menu is set, make a shopping list (click here for my Dog Party Checklist) and give yourself a few days to prep. It makes the whole process feel a lot more manageable.
Set Up Dog Party Games to Keep Them Busy
Keep those tails wagging with a few simple dog party games and activities
I always recommend having a mix of toys on hand to keep the dogs both mentally and physically engaged. Some of my go-to options are puzzle toys (Leo loves this one), snuffle mats, KONGs, a small ball pit, or even an obstacle course.
If you want something more interactive, set up a scavenger hunt! Hide dog-friendly treats around your space and let the dogs sniff them out. It’s easy to set up and keeps them entertained for a while.
Make sure there are designated break areas where dogs can rest, and always keep an eye on group dynamics to make sure everyone stays comfortable.

Put Together Simple Dog Party Decorations
Start with a few foundational pieces like dog-themed balloons (these bone-shaped balloons are cute, too), foil backdrops, and birthday banners that align with your color palette. From there, layer in smaller details that tie back to your dog party theme, like table decor, signage, or cupcake toppers personalized with your dog’s name.
I like to carry the same colors throughout the entire setup, from the decor to the cake and even the accessories. It keeps everything feeling cohesive.
Send Guests Home with Themed Dog Party Favors
Send your guests home with dog party favors as a “thank you”. Some easy dog recs are homemade dog treats, custom bandanas, and chew toys. For humans, add in some dog-themed cookies or a packaged snack.
You can package everything in this cute paw print gift bag to stay on theme!

Dog Birthday Ideas: Leo’s 2nd Birthday Bash
Here’s an example of a birthday brunch I threw for Leo when he turned 2! I decorated my parents’ breakfast nook in shades of blue, orange, and gray, carrying that color palette throughout the entire setup.
For the humans, I ordered breakfast catering. For the dogs, I picked up dog-safe pastries from a local bakery so Leo and his friends had their own version of the spread. It was a huge hit!
But the best part wasn’t the balloons or the treats. It was watching Leo light up as he tried his birthday cake and played in the yard with his best friends. He felt *extra* loved that day, and it made all the effort worth it.
